National Vegetable Society - particularly good for Medwyn Williams' veg growing advice.

Allotment Diary - learn how the really keen grow and prepare vegetables for shows.

Hardy Plant Society - Kent Group - talks and events in the Kent area for those who are especially interested in growing hardy perennials. The talks are excellent and there are really interesting varieties of plants to buy plus a display of photographs from members. One particularly good option is the Lenham Spring plant fair, which is open to anyone to attend and is followed by a talk in the afternoon. Non members may attend but pay a slightly higher entrance fee for the talk.

Garden Retail

Kevin Giles:Plants at the Swan, Charing The most local plant source for members next to the Swan, and he offers members a discount too!

The Potted Garden, Bearsted - along the A20 just beyond motorway J8 and sells lovely quality plants. Staff are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Crofters Nursery, Charing Heath - See John Webb for trees and particularly grafted fruit trees.

Madrona Nursery - For someone wanting to find unusual plants this can be an interesting nursery to explore.

Stone Green Nursery Bethersden - Has a number of opening days during the growing season to sell to retail customers. Watch out for their signs. A good place to buy larger trees and shrubs but there is a huge range of plants. Go early in the day to avoid the parking delays. Stocks a huge range of plants in different sizes.

Halls Court NurseryBethersden - Geraniums, pelargoniums, alpines and herb specialist next door to Stone Green

If you still don't know what you want, talk to Kevin Giles in the Archbishop's Palace and he'll advise you and find your plants. You can also pick up some seasonal plants he sells from there.

Beech Court gardens,Challock, nr Ashford, Kent, TN25 4DJ. Also has a tea room.

Godinton House & gardens Ashford, Kent, TN23 3BP - An interesting medieval hall house with grounds containing amongst many things a bulb meadow, vegetable and fruit, a lovely, peaceful Italian garden, new winter planting down by the pond and a walled kitchen garden. Godinton also houses the collection for the Delphinium Society's national collection. Garden open all year.

Doddington Placenr Sittingbourne, Kent, ME9 0BB -(6miles) - Privately owned gardens but open May-Aug.

10-30 miles away

Belmont House & gardensThrowley, nr. Faversham, Kent, ME13 0HH-(10 miles) - Lovely walled kitchen garden designed by Lady Arabella Lennox-Boyd. Also interesting to look at different fruit tree training methods.

Sissinghurst Castle gardenSissinghurst, Kent, TN17 2JP (11 miles) Not open during the winter months but still a lovely garden to visit. A new head gardener in Spring 2013 has brought welcome changes to the garden. If you have National Trust membership it is free too so is a good garden to visit throughout the open season. For the adventurous go early in the season before there is too much growth and see how they pruned and tied in the different types of roses during the winter. It is one of the best places to look at that. Also, check out the new(ish) vegetable garden - the young woman who runs the vegetable section is very friendly and helpful. Let down by uninspiring plant shop with the garden rejects.

Great Dixter (27 miles) Further away but one of the best gardens to visit, especially to look at exciting planting and colour combinations. Fergus Garrett, the Garden Director is a regular speaker in this area and enthused us enormously when he came to speak in 2008 and 2015. Garden closed Nov-Mar. Good plant nursery.

The Secret Gardens of Sandwich (29 miles) Another nice garden that Steve Edney, the Head Gardener, has been restoring over the last 10 years. Was supposed to have been laid out by Gertrude Jekyll so he is enthusastically following her gardening style and included a copy of her famous long border. He gave us a great talk in 2010 and we followed it up with a really successful visit. Small but good quality plant sales area.

More than 30 miles but still a day trip
